JEE Main 2022 marks vs percentile give an idea of what marks are required to be scored to attain a desired percentile in the exam. The JEE Main score also determines the rank of the candidate in this national-level entrance examination for admission to engineering colleges like IITs, NITs, and GFTIs.
JEE Main 2024 Session 2 is underway. The JEE Main 2024 Session 2 is being held from Apr 4 to Apr 12, 2024. JEE Main result 2024 for Session 2 will be released by the conducting authority on Apr 25, 2024.

JEE Main: Marks, Percentile, & Rank
There is a difference between the three metrics - marks, percentile, and rank - for determining the result of a candidate who has appeared in the JEE Main examination.
Marks in the JEE Main examination refer to the total marks obtained by a candidate in the JEE Main examination. The total marks in the JEE Main examination are 300. Each correct answer is awarded 4 marks and for each incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted.
Percentile is not the same as percentage. This metric represents the number of candidates who have scored below the candidate in question (whose percentile is to be calculated). The higher the percentile the better the opportunity of getting admission to the top colleges including NITs, IITs, and GFTIs.
Calculation of JEE Main percentile is done using the following formula:
Percentile = 100 * (Total number of candidates scoring below or equal to the marks scored by a particular candidate / Total number of candidates who have taken the examination)
The rank indicates the position (score-wise) of the candidate concerning the other candidates who took the examination.

JEE Main 2022 Marks vs Percentile - Normalisation Process
The normalization process aims to draw a parallel between the levels of difficulty in both sessions of the JEE Main exam. The percentile obtained by a candidate in the JEE Main is released once the normalization process is implemented.
The raw score obtained by the candidate is used for the normalization of marks scored by the candidate in the JEE Main. The NTA employs the normalization process to equalize the scores obtained by a candidate in different sessions of the examination.
For example, suppose the difficulty level of any exam is too high. In that case, the conducting authority will mediate the scores obtained in that particular paper by normalizing the scores across the sessions and shifts of the exam.

Tiebreaker Guidelines for the JEE Main Examination
The NTA has set certain guidelines for breaking up ties among the candidates who have the same percentile. To resolve the tie, the ranks of the candidates will be set in descending order concerning the points below:
- The candidate who has obtained a greater percentile in Maths shall be given preference over the other candidates who have scored the same percentile in the JEE Main exam.
- The candidate who has scored a greater percentile in Physics shall be given preference over the other candidates in the JEE Main exam.
- The candidate with a greater percentile in Chemistry will be considered to have a higher position with respect to the other candidates scoring the same percentile in the JEE Main exam.
- The candidate who has an older age among the equal percentile scoring candidates will be ranked higher.
