Table of Contents
The difference among the XAT 2022 score vs percentile is that the XAT score is the total marks obtained by a candidate in all the sections of the exam, while the XAT percentile is a number that is determined by calculating the total number of candidates who have scored either equal to or less than a certain candidate (whose percentile is to be calculated) in the exam.
XAT or Xavier Arithmetic Aptitude is a test that is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for the admission of the candidates to various MBA programs under the institute. The difficulty level of the XAT entrance test is moderate to high.
The scorecard of XAT shows the XAT percentile of the candidate. And hence, it is crucial to understand the difference between XAT score and XAT percentile.
This article will discuss the difference between XAT 2022 score vs percentile while also discussing the section-wise and overall score, percentile, and cutoffs.
What is XAT Score?
XAT score, as it seems, is the marks obtained by a candidate in the XAT exam. This score is the total score of the candidate by adding the individual marks scored in each section. This score is the basis on which the percentile is calculated further.
The XAT exam paper consists of 105 questions in all. There are three sections into which these questions are divided. The sections are Verbal and Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, and Decision Making.
The distribution of section-wise marks can be found below:

How to Calculate the XAT score?
Following points are taken into consideration while computing the total score in XAT exam.
- Each question carries 1 mark. For each correct answer, 1 mark is awarded. A negative mark of 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
- 0.10 marks are deducted if more than 8 questions are left unanswered.
- No marks will be awarded or deducted for General Knowledge.
- Three questions are given in the Essay section out of which one is answered. The evaluation for this section is done if the candidate is shortlisted.

What is XAT Percentile?
Percentile calculation in the XAT exam is done by calculating the proportion of students who have scored more or less than a certain candidate in the exam.
Calculation of percentile can be explained with the help of this example: If a candidate is said to have scored 80 percentile in XAT, it will indicate that 80% of the total candidates who have taken the exam, has scored less than this candidate in question.
How to Calculate XAT Percentile?
IT is crucial to understand how the XAT percentile is calculated. It is not calculated in a manner the percentage is calculated. Following the below mentioned steps, one can calculate the XAT percentile:
Step 1: First of all, the total number of eligible candidates taking the XAT exam in both the shifts is to be determined.
Step 2: A ranking must be given to each candidate based on the individual scores in different sections of the exam.
Step 3: The ranking of the candidate who has scored the highest marks in XAT exam must be considered and taken into account.
Step 4: The percentile must be calculated and the figure can be rounded off to the 2 nearest decimal points. For instance, if a candidate has scored a 90.995 percentile, the figure can be rounded off to 91 percentile.
Now, the XAT percentile can be calculated by the following formula:
XAT Percentile = (1 - Rank of the Candidate / Total Number of Candidates Taking the Exam) * 100%
For example, if we suppose that a total of 50000 candidates took that XAT exam and a certain candidate has ranked 25000, the XAT percentile of the candidate will be:
XAT percentile = (1- 25000/50000) * 100%
XAT percentile = 50
Therefore, the XAT percentile of the candidate is 50.
