Founded in 1963 by Dr. Vishnu Ganesh Vaishampayan, this prestigious institution received MCI recognition for its MBBS program in 1974. Initially a private medical college, it was taken over by the government in 1977. The college also gained MCI recognition for postgraduate courses in 1977. Over the years, it has grown and is now one of the most prominent colleges for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in India. The college is affiliated with Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sarvopchar Rugnalaya (Civil Hospital), which has a bed capacity of 733.
