Government Kilpauk Medical College abbreviated as GKMC was established in 1960 as a Govt. Medical Institution situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. KMC was initially conceived as a college for women and the college admits only a limited number of 100 students every academic year. The seventy year old institution has four more institutions attached to it namely Government Royapettah Hospital, Government Thiruvateeswarar Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, Government Peripheral Medical College Hospital in K.K.Nagar and Government Peripheral Hospital in Anna Nagar. GKMC is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai and it offers a number of UG and PG programs. The facilities provided by the institution includes excellent training, state of art medical education, full-fledged emergency department consisting triangle area, resuscitation bay and colour coded zones as per Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative(TAEI) and patient care. The KMC hospital ranks third among government colleges after the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the Government Royapettah Hospital. The hospital is also known for its level II trauma care centre and the zero delay ward in the hospital admits an average of 40-50 cases daily. The college has turned out eminent stalwarts in several specialties expanding many folds over the year and will become one of the distinguished service providers in the years to come.

GKMC offers various under graduation, post graduation and diploma courses for all its prospective students applying. The college takes in 100 students annually consisting of 85% of the total number of seats are filled by the Director of Medical Education under the State Government of Tamil Nadu and the remaining 15 % is filled in by the All India Quota students. The institution offers a five year under graduation program in the stream of medicine. The annual intake every academic year is a limited intake of 100 students only and admission is done on merit basis. The total number of students as of now admitted in the program is a total of 429 students.

Paramedical Courses
The college offers up to ten paramedical programs for its prospective candidates. Among these courses Cardiac Sonography Technician course takes is an all male students, Orthopaedic Technician takes is an all female student program and Certificate Radiological Assistant program allots 20 % of its seats to children of servicemen.

GKMC provides facilities such as lecture halls, library,cafeteria, hostel etc for the students convenience. There are a total of 13 lecture halls in the college’s campus with a seating capacity of 960 seats excluding the old and new auditorium buildings. The two auditorium buildings alone have a seating capacity of about 660 people. The library in the college works from morning till evening eight with a total of 17,104 books, 6870 bound volumes, 10 Indian journals, 20 foreign journals, an air-conditioned computer room with a single system and a computer lab with e-library facility where all the students are able to utilize the library for browsing, literature search, accessing journals etc. The library operates in two shifts and has 2 reading rooms, internet, xerox machine, television and video-cum recorder available for the students aid. Apart from these facilities there is a stack room which is used to stack further 10,000 back volumes of periodicals and old books. Hostel facilities for both the gender is available within the campus premises with all the required facilities such as mess, reading rooms, washrooms, Wi-Fi, indoor court etc. The hospital is also present within the campus premises and has both in patients and outpatient facilities with latest equipment and enough working faculties maintaining a clean environment.
The departments inside the college are divided broadly into pre-clinical and clinical departments which function in the college side and hospital side respectively. In total there are about 46 departments in total including both the divisions,
