Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, one of North India’s oldest medical colleges and the first in Jammu & Kashmir, was established in 1959. Initially a small dispensary near the Jhelum River, GMC has grown into a premier institution that has significantly contributed to healthcare in the region. The college was officially inaugurated on August 25, 1961, by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, the then Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, with 50 undergraduate students.The first departments, Anatomy and Physiology, were established in the dispensary before the college was relocated to its current site in Karan Nagar. In 1966, postgraduate courses in Pre-Clinical subjects were introduced, followed by clinical postgraduate courses in 1968. Over time, GMC has also expanded to train paramedical staff, including radiographers, lab technicians, nurses, and pharmacists, playing a crucial role in the healthcare workforce of the state.
