Affordable fee structure and quality education at the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) Kerala often stand out as a favorite place for learning. However, improper placements make students think twice before applying at MGU.

GetMyUni's Verdict on MGU

Ranked 31 in the NIRF 2023 rankings, Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) is one of the oldest universities in Kerala. MGU offers an array of courses under postgraduate and undergraduate programs. However, the depleting placement rate of MGU is a matter of concern among the students.

With a legacy of over seven decades, MGU is well known for its lush green Campus. MGU assures quality education with all the basic amenities. However, students often feel that the quality of the mess food and the hostel facilities can be improved as they rate it as average.

MGU only offers good placements for postgraduate students. The poor alumni network often drags no prestigious companies for placements, though the college provides good placement training.

An Array of Affordable Courses

With over 300 affiliated colleges under its belt, MGU offers an array of courses under postgraduation and undergraduate programs. Master's degree courses at MGU Kerala are well known, and the quality of teaching and placement is quite commendable.

The course fee at the university is affordable. Undergraduate courses cost around 2,000 to 6,00,00 on average. PG courses will cost approximately 35,000 to 7,00,000.  Students can avail themselves of the benefits of scholarships to pay the college fee.

The syllabus taught at MGU is updated per the University standards. Still, the lack of industry-relevant topics often hinders students' chances for new learning. Students believe that the syllabus taught at MGU is updated as per the required standards.

Knowledgable and Experienced Faculty

Faculties at MGU are highly experienced with good core knowledge about their respective subjects. Since MGU does not have many students from other states, there is no language barrier between students and faculties.

Furthermore, for PG courses, MGU needs more industry-experience faculties and faculties for UG courses are experienced in their respective fields. However, MGU faculties are experienced in their respective fields and are approachable to students without any hesitations.

Modern Infrastructure

The infrastructure of MGU is modern and has all the required facilities. Being one of the oldest universities in Kerala, MGU has updated its infrastructure according to the trends of the time.

MGU Conference

Smart classrooms, a spacious assembly hall where seminars, workshops, and meetings will be held, and a library with 57,350 books, 2,500 e-books, 2,050 theses, and 7,500 journals are some of the facilities available under MGU's infrastructure.

MGU has specified grounds allocated for basketball, cricket, and football. MGU has a well-maintained canteen, which is also a favorite hangout place for students.

Well Established Hostel

MGU provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls. MGU hostel has all the basic facilities like CCTV surveillance, wi-fi connectivity, well-maintained washrooms, and more. Students can make hostel room reservations through MGU's online portal.

Each room at the MGU hostel accommodates 3 students. Separate tables, chairs, beds, and other basic amenities will be provided for each student. MGU authorities make sure that the hostel is ragging-free and that students feel safe and comfortable.

The majority of the students feel that the quality of the mess food must be improved. The University has a dedicated mess committee to look after all the mess-related activities.

Deteriorating Placement Rates

Having a legacy of over seven decades, MGU still fails to provide decent placement opportunities for students. Last year, a 5-year undergraduate course attracted only a 1.8L annual package, and PG courses attracted a 5L package.

MGU Seminar

Though the placement rates are slightly increasing than in previous years, it is a matter of concern as no core companies turn up for placements at MGU. The University provides good placement training for the students but fails to invite companies for placements.

MGU must create a strong alumni network and strategize placement activities. The deteriorating placement rates at MGU forces students to search for jobs outside, which is a troublesome task.

Life at MGU

Predominantly occupied by students from all over the state of Kerala, it is hard to find diverse students from various parts of the country. However, the alumni students feel that they had their best days during their stay at the Campus.

Since the majority of the students and faculty members speak in Malayalam, there is no language barrier for the native students; however, outside students might find it difficult to communicate.

MGU Event

Life at MGU is jovial, with various academic and cultural events happening all the time during the academic year. The university has specific student committees to organize and coordinate events.

There is no strict dress code imposed on students, and there is no uniform. Students have to maintain their attendance in order to be eligible for semester exams. However, students feel that the rules and regulations at the Campus are not that strict.

Is MGU Worth It?

Historical University, jovial Campus with all the basic amenities, and quality education are some of the positive notes about the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. Though the University provides good placement training, it fails to provide placement opportunities.

The Campus is full of life with all the academic and cultural activities. Students often have the feeling that the University is good for getting a degree but not good at providing placement opportunities.

To conclude, MGU is a go-to option for students of Kerala who would like to get any degree under their name. Students who strictly want to be placed must think twice before applying at MGU.
