National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, [NIELIT] Calicut was established in the year 1989 by the Government of India and approved by All India Council for Technical Education. The institute comes under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It was formerly called Department of Electronics and Accreditation of Computer Classes Calicut but the name NIELIT was adopted in the year 2011 by the Central Government. University Grants Commission looks after the Financial Structure of the Institute.

CEDT was first established in Bangalore on the IISC Campus in 1974. After it's successful running, the then Department of Electronics set up CEDTs all over the country including Calicut. This was done to develop human resources at different levels and in different specialised areas of Electronics Design. The objective of this institution is to bridge the gap between academic institutions and industries. Formal degree programs at NIELIT are affiliated to the Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam Technical University, Kerala and Ph.D programs are awarded through the University of Calicut. This institute is also engaged in R & D activities and provides product development and industrial consultancy services.

NIELIT Calicut has 39 other sister institutes set up by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. They are at Agartala, Aizawl, Ajmer, Aurangabad, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Chuchuyimlang, Churachandpur, Delhi, Dibrugarh, Gangtok, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Haridwar, Imphal, Itanagar, Jammu, Jorhat, Kohima, Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Kurukshetra, Leh, Lucknow, Lunglei, Pasighat, Patna, Pali, Ranchi, Ropar, Senapati, Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Srinagar, Tezpur, Tura, Tezu.

NIELIT Calicut has 25 acres of lush green campus provided by the Government of Kerala. It embodies unique Kerala Style Architecture coupled with State of the Art facilities. Since its inception this centre has been an implementing agency for many Government Schemes under the HRD in the field of information. NIELIT Calicut courses include both Formal and Informal disciplines of Information and Electronics Technology. The institute strives to give best of Academic as well as Industrial knowledge to its students.

NIELIT Calicut is a National Institute and hence is a melting point of very diverse community on the campus. Students from all over the country study here and accomodations for the students are made within the institute. NIELIT Calicut Infrastructure Facilities helps in the conduct of industry oriented quality education and training in the state-of-the-art facilities. The centre is engaged in R & D activities and provide product development and industry consultancy services. 

• NIELIT Calicut has 5 labs with which are fully equipped with latest systems as well as development tools. The labs are built with International Standards and Research and Project work can be done. 
• Libray has an area of 275 Sq.ft and has a great collection of Books, Journals, and other documents dealing with latest topics in various fields of Engineering, Computer Science and Management. The collection is completely computerized and is available in the digital library.
• There are around 10,000 books in the library collection on mainly Engineeirng and Computer Applications fields.
• Some of the E-Journals the college is subscribed to are IEEE Xplore Digital Library, SCIENCE DIRECT, SPRINGER (Electrical, Electronics & Computer Science Engineering), ASTM Digital Library.
• The Collection and Services of the Library and Information Centre are fully computerized using a software called WINLIS (Windows Based Library Information Software), developed by NIELIT Calicut. 
• NIELIT Calicut is a WiFi enabled campus and students can use the service for their Projects as well as research work. The digital library can also be accessed using the network.
• NIELIT Calicut hostel (ladies & mens) in the campus can accommodate around 250 students.

Why a candidate is required to register with NIELIT? 

Registration is a mandatory pre-requisite for appearing in the O/A/B/C level Examinations conducted by the NIELIT.

How do I check the status of my Registration Application to any course?

Registration application status can be checked in the online student Portal on the official website, by supplying the Registration Application No. received during the filling up the Online Registration Application Form (ORAF).

Is the courses offered by the NIELIT, are recognized by the Government?

 Yes, Level O/A/B is duly recognized by Govt.of India. (O/A) Level, (B Level) and (C Level) Recognition of C level is under process.

I am Registered for O/A/B level but yet to clear the level. Can I Register for the next higher level?

If you are eligible for the next higher level you could get Registered for that level after cancelling the existing Registration number. However, you will not be given any chance to clear the left over paper of the previous level as your registration for the lower level will not be valid any more.

Can I make payment of Registration fees by DD along with online forms?

No. Payment of registration fees by DD is not permitted along with online forms. You have to make online payment by using credit/debit cards/net banking/CSC Services only.

NIELIT Calicut Admission has easy access online admission procedure. The candidates seeking admission shoud fulfil all the necessary eligibility criteria. The admissions to NIELIT is very competitive because of the limited seats available.

M.Tech Admission:

• Candidates should apply on-line. After filling all the required fields, a print out of the application should be taken and sent to the M.Tech coordinator, NIELIT Calicut along with the appropriate application fees.
• A passport size photograph taken not earlier than 3 months is to be affixed on the Application Form. The photo in the application should be self-attested.

PG Diploma Admission:

• Students are advised to apply online portal on the institute website. After filling the form the documents must be uploaded and institute will take the information filled as the basis for admission.
• Selection of candidates who have the requisite qualifying degree will be based on the percentage of marks in their qualifying degree subject to eligibility and availability of seats.

Advanced Diploma Admission:

• Students are advised to apply online portal on the institute website. After filling the form the documents must be uploaded and institute will take the information filled as the basis for admission.
• Selection of candidates will be based on the marks obtained in their qualifying examination.

National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Calicut Hostel Facilities:

NIELIT Calicut facilities includes hostels for both Boys and Girls. They are well equipped and provide a good study environment for the resident hosteller.

• There are total of 6 hostels, 3 each for Men and Women.
• The total capacity of NIELIT Calicut Hostels is 250.
• Out of the 3 Hostels for men, 2 are 3 seated and the other one is 2 seated.
• Hostels for women have 3 seated rooms, with a total capacity of about 70 students.
• Students who seek admission to the Hostels have to pay the fees to the Accounts Section of the Institute at the time of their admission.
• The Hostel Warden has the powers to remove any inmate from any Hostel at any time, if the inmate is found violating any disciplinary rules.
