North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH), the pioneering medical institution in North Bengal, was set up in 1968 under the vision of Dr. B.C. Roy and the leadership of then-state health minister Ajit Kumar Panja. Initially affiliated with North Bengal University, it received recognition from the Medical Council of India in 1978. In August of the same year, it was renamed and administratively transferred to the West Bengal government.
