Patna Medical College was founded in 1874 as Temple Medical School. This college was shifted to Darbhanga in 1925. PMC is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia and the sixth oldest medical colleges in British India. Initially, there were 35 admissions per year but present there are 150 admissions for each batch. This was the first college to start a postgraduate course in 1932 in whole undivided India. Patna Medical College is affiliated to Aryabhatta Knowledge University. PMC has the honor of creating and treating many national dignitaries. At present Patna Medical College administers postgraduate courses in almost all super-specialist. The college provides undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This college remains one of the shining lights for medical education in India. PMC admission is done under the hand of college management.
Established in 1925 Patna Medical College Hospital is a premier medical college located in Bihar and affiliated to the Aryabhatta Knowledge University. The admission cut off for PMC is 50 percent for general category applicants and 40 percent for applicants from the reserved category. Patna Medical College admission offers a 5-year MBBS course at Undergraduate level. MD, MS, and Postgraduate diploma programs are offered at Postgraduate level in PMC, Patna. Admission to MBBS course requires a pass in the NEET-UG exams and admission to MD course will be granted on the basis of NEET PG Entrance Exam score. The duration of the MBBS course at Patna Medical College is four and a half years which includes a one-year rotatory internship at the end of the course. The internship is mandatory to pass the MBBS course in PMC and concludes with theory and practical exams.
The course is for a duration of 4 and 1/ 2 years. As per the Medical Council of India, there are 9 semesters each of 6 months’ duration. The college offers a total of 180 seats in MBBS.
Applicants who have qualified NEET UG conducted by CBSE are eligible for admission. A student is eligible for entry to the course after clearing the 12th class (Intermediate) examination. Reservation of seats for Scheduled Caste/ Tribes and other backward classes are made according to state government guidelines. NEET (UG) is a national level test conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the 2nd week of May and is a pen-paper test of 3 hours’ duration.

The college offers a few postgraduate programs in Doctor Of Medicine (MD), Master Of Surgery (MS), and PG Diploma courses. PMC offers 106 seats with 15 specializations in Doctor of Medicine (MD). The college also offers 67 seats with 6 specializations in Master Of Surgery (MS) and 11 seats with 4 specializations in PG Diploma courses. All the diploma students are full-time postgraduate students attached to the concerned department. Duties and responsibilities are the same as MD/ MS students.

Candidates who have completed MBBS and internship are eligible to apply for admission into MS/ MD/ PG Diploma courses. Applicants can get admission on the basis of NEET PG result. NEET-PG is a computer-based test of 3 hours 30 minutes duration and has 300 MCQs to attempt. Candidates who belong to the General category and have scored a minimum of 50% are considered qualified and those who belong to SC/ ST/ OBC category should have obtained at least 40% to qualify the test. Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counseling on the basis of NEET PG merit at all India level for admission of the candidates against 50% of all India quota seats. All the diploma students are full-time postgraduate students attached to the concerned department. Duties and responsibilities are the same as MD/ MS students. All the courses are of 2 years duration.

The college offers 1 Super Specialty course in M.Ch. (Pl. Surgery). Candidates who have completed MS (Surgery) or MD (Medicine) are eligible to apply for NEET-SS conducted by the National Board of Examinations to get admission into the Super Specialty courses. Admission to the candidates is given solely on the basis of their NEET-SS merit. Admission to M.Ch course is made through All India M.Ch. entrance test managed by Director General of Medical Education and Training of U.P. state. Candidates who have passed their MD (Medicine) or MS (Surgery) course are eligible. NEET-SS is a computer-based test with 200 MCQs. The questions are based on MS/ MD syllabus taught in the Medical Colleges of the country approved by MCI. Only the Department of Cardiology of Patna Medical College offers Super Specialty Courses to the aspirants. Admission to these courses is made through All India D.M./M.Ch. entrance test conducted by Director General of Medical Education and Training of U.P. state. Candidates who have passed their MD (Medicine) or MS (Surgery) course are eligible for entrance test. The courses are for a duration of 3 years. The examination will be held at the end of three years. The admission fee is Rs. 2000/-.
