Initially known as the National Medical College, it aimed to train doctors who could serve both hospitals and communities. It was first affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay, offering the Licentiate Medical Practitioner (LMP) course. In 1925, Dr. AL Nair contributed land for the hospital campus and helped set up a hospital named after his mother, Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair. Later, Mr. MN Desai's generous donation led to the college being renamed Topiwala National Medical College. In 1946, the Bombay Municipal Corporation took over the college and hospital, acknowledging their high educational standards. Over the years, TNMC has expanded significantly, with a campus now covering 20 acres and hosting the 1300-bed BYL Nair Charitable Hospital. The institution is known for its pioneering work in areas like Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, and Audiology.
