Grant Medical College & Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, is a renowned institution with 175 years of history, making it the oldest medical college in Maharashtra. The college offers comprehensive medical education and healthcare, ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate programs, and provides specialized care to patients, including free or low-cost treatment to underserved populations. Its legacy of leadership in medical training and patient care continues to attract people from all over the country, particularly those from underdeveloped regions seeking quality healthcare.
The Name "Grant Medical College" was proposed by the famous Sanskrit scholar Jagannath Shankarsheth to honour Sir Robert Grant. On the 30th of March 1843, the foundation stone was laid and the college became a reality on 3rd November 1845 and thus started the Grant Medical College. Likely, with the plans and foundation of the college, it was also decided with the aid of donation offered by Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy, to substitute the previously existing Native general hospital in the city by creating the Sir JJ. Hospital. On the 3rd of January 1843, the foundation stone was laid and it was opened for the reception of the sick from 15th May 1845. The Motto of the institution is 'SOUND MIND IN SOUND BODY'.
