The Indian Medical Service was established by the British East India Company in 1764 to serve Europeans in British India. In 1822 the british Government founded "The Native Medical Institution" to train native doctors for civil and military services. This led to the establishment of the Medical College Kolkata on January 28, 1835, aimed at educating native youth, regardless of caste. The first batch of students, including Madhusudan Gupta, conducted the first human dissection in 1836, a milestone in Indian medical education. The first batch graduated in 1838, qualifying to practice medicine.In 1846, several students, supported by Dwarakanath Tagore, passed the MRCS exam and contributed to the Indian Medical Service. The college saw further milestones, including the admission of Kadambini Ganguly, the first woman student, in 1883. The institution grew with several hospitals like Eden Hospital and Ezra Hospital.The college's mission is to lead in medical education, patient care, research, and innovation, focusing on underserved communities. Its objectives include high-standard education, excellent patient care, advanced research, and improving health in rural and urban areas
