The Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences (SHUATS), formerly known as Allahabad Agricultural Institute, was established in 1910 by Dr. Sam Higginbottom. Driven by his concern for rural poverty and outdated farming practices, Dr. Higginbottom aimed to improve agricultural productivity and bridge the gap between urban Christians and rural masses. Initially focused on training villagers in modern farming methods, the institute became a pioneer in agricultural education, offering Asia’s first agricultural engineering degree in 1943.
SHUATS grew under various leaders, introducing innovative projects like the “Jamuna Par Punar Yojna,” which inspired India’s village-level worker model adopted globally. Despite financial challenges between 1980 and 1995, the institute recovered and earned recognition as a Deemed University in 2000 under the leadership of Prof. Rajendra B. Lal. Accredited by NAAC with an “A” grade in 2013 and recognized by ICAR and ICFRE, the institution was renamed in 2009 to honor Dr. Higginbottom.
In 2016, SHUATS was upgraded to a full-fledged state university under the Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences Act, ensuring continued advancement in agricultural education, research, and technology.
