Gauhati Medical College, which was set up in 1960, is the second medical college in Assam, following the creation of Assam Medical College in 1947. Initially, it started with 100 MBBS students, with the first batch recognized in 1966. Over time, the college expanded, now offering 200 MBBS seats, 210 Postgraduate seats, and 37 DM/MCh seats annually. It has 33 departments, including 12 super-specialty departments, and provides extensive medical care through its hospital, which has grown to 3,214 beds and 600 ICU beds. The hospital also includes advanced centers like the State Cancer Institute and a newly established Cardio Neuro Centre. The college is recognized for its contribution to medical research and has a College of Nursing for training in B.Sc and M.Sc degrees.
