FAQs on IIT Kharagpur

Q: What is IIT Kharagpur famous for?

A: IIT Kharagpur is primarily famous for its distinction as the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), established in 1951, and its historical location on the grounds of the former Hijli Detention Camp .It is renowned for having the largest campus among all IITs (2,100 acres) and for pioneering interdisciplinary education. It houses unique schools, including the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (the only law school in the IIT system) and the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM). Consistently ranked highly in NIRF Engineering and Overall categories, it is a globally recognized institution for technical excellence and strong placement records.

Q: How can I apply for admission to IIT Kharagpur?

A: To apply for admission to IIT Kharagpur, candidates must first appear for the required entrance exams, such as JEE Advanced for B.Tech, GATE for M.Tech, or IIT JAM for M.Sc. After qualifying, candidates can apply through the respective counselling processes like JoSAA, COAP, or JOAP.

Q: Do the hostels at IIT Kharagpur provide meals for students?

A: Yes, the hostels at IIT Kharagpur offer mess facilities that serve nutritious and varied meals for students. Each hostel has its own mess where students can avail breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Q: What is the IIT Kharagpur M.Sc. Chemistry fees structure?

A: The total academic fee for the two-year, full-time M.Sc. Chemistry program is around ₹82,600 for the entire course, not including the additional hostel and mess charges. This makes it a highly affordable program. Crucially, the fees are subject to revision, and students from economically weaker sections may be eligible for significant fee waivers and scholarships, typically based on their family's annual income. Refer to the official IIT KGP fee circulars for the latest, specific semester-wise breakdown.

Q: Where can I find the overall IIT Kharagpur fees for other courses?

A: The comprehensive IIT Kharagpur fees for different academic programs, such as B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc., MBA, and PhD, vary considerably based on the course duration and category. To get the most accurate and detailed breakdown—including tuition, one-time payments, and refundable deposits—you must consult the official institute website. Look for the Fee Structure section, which provides the latest information specific to your course and category (General, SC/ST/PwD) to account for all components.

Q: What are the JEE Advanced IIT Kharagpur cutoff ranks for B.Tech admission?

A: The IIT Kharagpur cutoff for B.Tech admission is determined by the JEE Advanced All India Ranks (AIRs). These cutoff ranks are highly competitive and are subject to change annually based on applicant pool size and difficulty. They vary significantly by the specific branch and reservation category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). For instance, admission to the popular B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) branch for the General category typically closes within the top 500 AIRs during the JoSAA counselling process.

Q: How can students check their IIT KGP semester results?

A: Students of IIT Kharagpur can access their IIT KGP semester results, grades, and other vital academic records exclusively through the official ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) portal. To view their results, students must navigate to the institute's website and log in to the ERP system using their unique, required credentials (such as their enrollment number and password). The ERP portal is the centralized system for managing all student academic and administrative information.

Q: Can I get IIT Kharagpur with 3000 rank?

A: Based on previous years' JEE Advanced closing ranks for the General-Gender Neutral category, an All India Rank (AIR) of 3000 makes admission to IIT Kharagpur highly probable, though you won't get the most competitive branches. You would have good chances for Mechanical Engineering (closing rank 4016, Industrial Engineering 4329, Aerospace Engineering 4872, and Chemical Engineering 5222. However, top branches like Computer Science, AI, and Electrical Engineering typically close below a rank of 2000. Final admission depends on the branch, gender, and the current year's cutoff fluctuations during JoSAA counselling.
