Sir J.J. School of Art was established in 1857 by Jamshetji Jijibhoy, under the British administration. The college was established with the aim of imparting European academic art knowledge in the sub-continent and it developed with the establishment of art and craft departments with the rich diversity of culture in India as the resource point.
The college campus includes departments of drawing and painting, sculpture and modelling, mural, portraiture, printmaking, arts and crafts including ceramics, interior decoration, metalwork, Textile design and Teachers training. The college holds a strong ground giving training in all the technical aspects of fine arts, with exposure to all mediums. J.J school encourages extra-curricular activities and workshops along with the regular educational classes such that the students maintain equilibrium with the contemporary.

J.J School of Art began in 1857 with elementary drawing and design classes at Elphinstone institute. Later in 1865, a school of Architecture, a class for teacher of Art and Craft and School of Decorative design were found by Mr Lockwood Kipling, Mr Higgins and Mr Griffiths. By 1890, the school was taken over by the Education Department of Government of Bombay, accepting the significance of Indian art and crafts as part of culture rather than just technical education and industry.
The School then introduced Reay Art Workshops in 1891 by Lord Reay, then Governor of Bombay. Initially, it brought about the erection of the Applied Art Section but today it encompasses the Arts and Crafts Department. In 1919, a mural Painting class began for the study of Indian style of painting under Ct.Gladstone Solomon.
Sir J.J school of Art encouraged technical advancement and knowledge of art history to both Indian and western students. J.J started working as a Fine Art School in 1958 as the department of applied arts and architecture were separated. The School saw many great thinkers and visionaries associated with, like J.D. Gondhlekar, P.A. Dhond, Shankar Palsikar, Madhav Satawlekar, Baburao Sadwelkar, Sambhaji Kadam, V.R. Amberkar, Vasant Parab, Shantinath Arwade, who were not only artists but did substantial work in research and development of art understanding, appreciation and criticism on a whole.

For M.F.A.
The Admission to the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) course will be made purely on the merits of the candidate's qualification and performance in the interview which is held by the panel of staff or experts appointed by the Principal.
The Interview will carry a total of 100 marks, out of which 50 marks will be 50% marks of the grand total of the marks obtained at degree examination of B.F.A. and remaining 50 marks will be allotted to the candidate's performance in the interview.
It is mandatory that the applied candidate should produce his/her B.F.A. class/Sessional/term-work portfolio at the time of the interview.
Admissions for the M.F.A course will be open to the students from foreign countries on recommendations by the Ministry of Education and Cultural/External Affairs, Government of India and through proper channel. Their applications will be considered subject to minimum qualifications to their eligibility for admission.
Sir J.J School follows some standard rules for passing the Examination. To Pass M.F.A (by papers) a candidate must obtain a minimum of 50 per cent marks in each of the Theory papers, Sessional work, Dissertation and Viva-voce separately.
Candidates who have obtained less than 60 per cent of the marks on the aggregate will be placed in the Second class.
Candidates who obtain a minimum of 60 per cent of the marks on the aggregate will be placed in the First Class.
Successful candidates who obtain a minimum of 70 per cent of the marks on the aggregate will be declared to have passed the examination in First Class with Distinction.
Sir J.J School of Art provides various facilities. J.J college of art facilities includes hostel facilities for both men and women. Male Students who are in need of hostel facilities may apply for hostel accommodation to the rector and female students who are in need of hostel accommodation should apply to the Superintendent, Savitribai Phule Hostel.
