A Comparison Between Marks vs Percentile, and Rank
Three different metrics are followed in the JEE Main examination that the candidates must be aware of. They are the JEE Main score or marks, the JEE Main percentile, and the JEE Main rank.
The JEE Main marks or scores are the accumulated marks scored by the candidate in all the subjects in the examination.
The JEE Main percentile is a metric that shows the total percentage of candidates who have scored less than the candidate in question (whose percentile is being calculated). For example, if a candidate scores 92 percentile, it indicates that 92% of the total number of candidates who have taken the examination have scored less than the candidate in question.
The JEE Main rank is a metric showing the position of the candidate (in terms of marks scored in the exam) among the total number of candidates who have taken the examination. The JEE Main rank is also referred to as the All India Rank (AIR). To obtain the AIR or JEE Main rank of a candidate, the marks scored in both sessions are normalized. Following the normalization process the candidate with the highest score gets the 1st rank, the second highest score gets the 2nd rank, and it continues.

Normalization of Marks
The process of normalization in the JEE Main examination is employed to balance the difficulty levels of the sessions in the examination. The raw marks obtained by the candidates are normalized by the NTA using the below-mentioned formula:
Normalized Marks = Percentile Score of the Candidate − Mean Percentile Score of the Session / Standard Deviation of Percentile Scores in the Session × 100 + 50

JEE Main 2024 Rank Predictor
The candidates can assess their test and know their approximate ranks through a JEE Main rank predictor. For example, if a candidate has scored 96 percentile in the JEE Main 2024, it indicates that the candidate is ahead of the other candidates who have taken the examination by 4%. This in turn signifies that the candidate will remain among the top 4% of the candidates scoring the highest marks.
